Nairobi County officially launched the Market Modernization Program, a flagship initiative aimed at upgrading traditional markets across the city to meet modern standards of infrastructure, safety, and digital integration. County officials emphasized that the program is part of the broader Business Growth and Innovation Agenda, designed to strengthen SMEs, improve trade efficiency, and enhance the overall business environment.
The modernization program focuses on renovating market facilities, improving sanitation, introducing digital payment systems, and enhancing security. Nairobi County also committed to building smart stalls with internet connectivity, cold storage facilities, and waste management systems, ensuring that traders can operate in cleaner, safer, and more efficient spaces. By embedding digital tools into market operations, the county aims to reduce cash dependency and expand access to e-commerce opportunities for small traders.
Traders and entrepreneurs welcomed the initiative, noting that modernized markets will help them increase sales, attract more customers, and reduce operational challenges. Analysts argue that the program is transformative for Nairobi’s informal economy, which employs thousands of residents and serves as a backbone for food distribution and retail trade. The program complements earlier initiatives such as the Digital Training Programs (September 2025) and the Women Entrepreneurs Grant Program (August 2025), creating a comprehensive ecosystem for inclusive growth.
Looking ahead, Nairobi County plans to expand the Market Modernization Program by integrating AI-powered inventory systems, green energy solutions, and partnerships with fintech firms. Officials believe that by embedding modernization into traditional markets, Nairobi can accelerate job creation, attract investment, and reinforce its role as East Africa’s commercial hub.
