Trans Nzoia County has announced plans to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs by allocating Sh45 million for the refurbishment of institutions across the region.

Speaking at Kitale Technical and Vocational Education Training Centre, the county’s TVET Director, Eliud Lusweti, emphasized the importance of equipping youth with technical skills to boost self-employment and economic empowerment.

As a county, we are committed to ensuring that out-of-school youth access vocational training, which will equip them with technical skills to become self-reliant, Lusweti said.

The county has also partnered with Tools to Work, a Polish organization, to supply over 32 TVET institutions with training tools and equipment over the next five years. This collaboration aims to address the shortage of equipment that has affected training quality in many facilities.

Despite government efforts, Lusweti noted that student enrollment in technical courses remains low. He urged parents and youth to embrace TVET programs, highlighting that technical skills are a sustainable legacy that prepares young people for today’s global job market.

Additionally, the county plans to provide startup kits to TVET graduates to facilitate the establishment of small businesses.

Kitale Vocational Training Centre Manager, Beatrice Baraza, commended Child Rescue Kenya Organisation for supporting vulnerable youth and young mothers in accessing vocational training. She encouraged graduates to register for National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) exams to advance their skills and pursue higher-level certifications.
