Nairobi — The government has begun implementing important reforms to facilitate Kenya’s shift from the 8-4-4 system to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) model. Under the reforms, the final national secondary school exams under the old system will be held in 2027. The first cohort of CBE learners, currently in Grade 9 as of 2025, will advance to senior school in 2026. The reforms also entail training and deployment of teachers, construction of classrooms, and other systemic changes to align with CBE requirements. Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura affirmed that the education calendar and resources have been adjusted to support the transition.
