Kalonzo: Selling Safaricom Sells Kenya

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has rejected the planned sale of Safaricom PLC shares, describing the telecommunications giant as a strategic national asset that should remain safeguarded by Kenyans.

In a statement issued on June 18, 2026, Kalonzo said he had appeared as lead counsel in Court of Appeal Civil Application No. E261 of 2026, which challenges the proposed share transaction.

“Earlier today, I appeared as lead counsel in Court of Appeal Civil Application No. E261 of 2026, the matter concerning the proposed disposition of Safaricom PLC shares,” he said.

He said the dispute arises from conservatory orders previously granted by the High Court and is now before the Court of Appeal.

“At the heart of it is a principle that admits no compromise: Safaricom PLC is not merely a corporation. It is a national institution, conceived in Kenya, built by Kenyans, and sustained by the tens of millions who depend on it every single day,” Kalonzo stated.

The former Vice President warned that any attempt to sell the company would undermine national sovereignty.

“To sell it is to sell Kenya’s soul and body,” he said.

Kalonzo stressed that the matter would be argued on constitutional and legal grounds, adding that public interest should guide the court’s ruling.

“We will present our case with the full force of the Constitution, the rule of law, and the sovereign interests of the Kenyan people behind us,” he said.

He added that the battle was not only legal but also one of national protection, saying, “Justice must prevail and Kenya must be protected.”

The case is expected to continue at the Court of Appeal as parties present their arguments on the proposed transaction involving Safaricom PLC, Kenya’s largest telecommunications company.
