The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has revealed plans to temporarily close a segment of the Ngong/Naivasha road adjacent to Junction Mall.
Through a public notice issued on Sunday, May 17, KURA indicated that this closure will facilitate the completion of asphalt paving for the Ngong/Naivasha road flyover.
The authority specified that the designated road section will experience partial closures beginning Monday, May 18, continuing through Sunday, May 31. These restrictions will be in effect nightly from 8 PM until 4 AM the following day.
“We wish to inform the public that a portion of Ngong Road / Naivasha Road at Junction Mall will be partially closed from Monday, May 18 to Sunday, May 31, inclusive. The closures will occur between 8:00 PM and 4:00 AM daily,” KURA announced.
“This temporary measure enables contractors to complete asphalt application as part of the final construction phase,” the authority explained.
KURA clarified that these works represent the concluding phase of ongoing road development initiatives focused on improving traffic circulation and urban mobility along this high-traffic corridor.
Notably, near Junction Mall, the agency has constructed an 800-meter flyover featuring a 254-meter steel structure engineered to circumvent the conventional traffic bottleneck at the Junction Mall roundabout.
This Ksh 3.58 billion elevated dual-carriageway project has been designed specifically to alleviate significant traffic congestion along Nairobi’s vital economic thoroughfare.
The development is approximately 90 percent complete and is anticipated to become operational in the near future, preceding the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled at Talanta Stadium.
Consequently, as this project advances to its final stages, KURA emphasized that the temporary closure is essential for enabling contractors to finalize the asphalt paving operations.
Following this announcement, KURA directed drivers to utilize alternate paths and adhere to guidance from traffic police personnel and marshals who will be stationed at the location during the restricted hours.
“We encourage motorists to select alternative routes and comply with instructions from traffic police and marshals,” KURA recommended.
In March, KURA had previously announced that similar closures would support the concrete pouring of the flyover deck currently under construction.
Ngong Road stands as one of Nairobi’s most congested transportation routes, characterized by substantial vehicular movement and significant pedestrian traffic. The impending closure will likely impact numerous commuters, particularly residents of Karen and Ngong districts.
Individuals traveling to Karen and Ngong town are encouraged to exit Ngong Road onto Hatheru Road, connect to Gitanga Road, then proceed to James Gichuru Road before rejoining Ngong Road at the Karen/Dagoretti corner bypass.
Drivers may alternatively opt for Riara Road, utilizing local access routes to avoid the primary intersection.
Simultaneously, motorists can utilize Lang’ata Road as a direct connection to the Southern Bypass, completely bypassing Ngong Road to access Karen directly.
