ODM seeks respect from UDA amid coalition friction

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called for respect from its coalition partner, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), citing concerns over “unjustified public remarks” by certain high-ranking UDA officials.
Following a Central Committee meeting on Thursday, April 16, 2026, ODM voiced apprehension that recent comments from UDA leaders are creating unease among ODM members and supporters.
“Regarding our relationship with our broad-based partners, the UDA party, the Central Committee noted with concern the developments and the unjustified public statements by some senior UDA officials aimed at causing anxiety and unease among our members. As a party that believes in its principles, ideology and the foundation on which it was founded, we demand RESPECT from the UDA party,” part of the statement read.

During the meeting, the party also addressed various internal and national matters. Key resolutions from the meeting include: A nationwide campaign to enhance and solidify the party’s presence, especially in its traditional strongholds, plans for a series of youth conventions beginning with Nairobi County on Monday, 20 April 2026, followed by Mombasa on Sunday, 26 April 2026.
Other plans involve a commitment to transparent and impartial nominations with “no exceptions” for any leadership positions, concern regarding the recent increase in fuel prices, while recognizing government initiatives to address the global crisis.
ODM also addressed the 10-point agenda and NADCO report, including the allocation of Ksh 2 billion in the Supplementary Budget for compensating victims of police brutality. ODM has urged the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to accelerate the process.
This latest statement emerges amid visible strain within the ODM-UDA coalition that forms the foundation of the current expansive government.
