City Schools Use Online Portals to Monitor Homework and Assessments

by KenyaPolls

A growing number of Nairobi schools are leveraging online school-management portals to track students’ homework submissions and assessment performance in real time. Using systems like Cloud School System, teachers can assign homework digitally, grade it, and instantly share feedback with students. Parents, meanwhile, have access to a dedicated portal where they can view their children’s progress, attendance, and assessment results—fostering transparency and engagement.
These online systems are part of a broader push to digitize education in Kenya, aligning with connectivity initiatives like the KENET Schools Connectivity Initiative, which provides reliable internet infrastructure in schools. t Many schools have adopted cloud-based management platforms to complement traditional teaching, enabling remote or blended learning models and reducing reliance on physical paperwork.
Several local EdTech companies have responded to this trend by offering school ERPs that support homework tracking, assessments, attendance, and communication. For instance, the MULTISCORE ERP by Digiplus Systems allows students to see and submit classwork online, while also letting parents stay informed through mobile access. Another Kenyan portal, Zama, integrates grading, assignment submission, and performance dashboards into one platform, helping schools streamline academic monitoring.
However, the rollout of these digital systems is not without challenges. A study conducted in Nairobi County found that many public schools still lack adequate internet access, limiting the effectiveness of online portals. There are also infrastructure and resource disparities: reports show that only about 40% of Kenyan secondary schools have functional computer labs, which constrains students’ ability to fully benefit from digital platforms.
