Celebrating Her Voice in Science: Empowering Girls in STEM in Kenya

by KenyaPolls

Kenya marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at St. Clare Girls High School, Nyamira County, under the theme Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science. The event brought together educators, mentors, students, government officials, and representatives from UNESCO and KNATCOM to highlight the importance of female participation in STEM fields. The celebration emphasized breaking down barriers and promoting gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Activities included dynamic speeches, mentorship sessions, and symbolic initiatives like planting 150 tree seedlings, which represented the growth of both scientific knowledge and environmental stewardship among young girls.

Throughout the event, speakers underscored the importance of visibility, mentorship, and institutional support for women in STEM. UNESCO and KNATCOM representatives highlighted the global underrepresentation of women in science, with less than 30% of STEM roles occupied by females. They encouraged students to view STEM as accessible and rewarding, dispelling stereotypes that these fields are reserved for male students. Motivational addresses and personal stories from female scientists reinforced the value of persistence, self-belief, and peer learning, inspiring participants to pursue STEM careers with confidence and determination.

The day concluded with a renewed commitment to supporting female students through mentorship, educational resources, and networking opportunities. By fostering an environment that empowers girls to explore science, the event demonstrated the critical role of collaborative partnerships between government, academia, and international organizations in closing the gender gap in STEM. The celebration affirmed that providing girls with the right tools, guidance, and encouragement can cultivate the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, and innovation, highlighting that the future of STEM is inclusive, diverse, and female-driven.
