On March 24, 2025, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) launched the Teacher Induction Mentorship and Coaching (TIMEC) program in Nairobi to enhance professional conduct, instructional quality, and school leadership.
The TIMEC program, officially rolled out by TSC on March 24, 2025, is a structured teacher support initiative designed to improve education standards across Nairobi and other counties. It targets newly recruited teachers, recently promoted school heads, and educators transitioning into leadership roles. The program emphasizes professional ethics, classroom effectiveness, and preventive strategies for managing teacher performance and conduct. Each participating school nominated five teachers, including the headteacher, to attend the one-day training sessions held at sub-county and county venues.
The mentorship model includes induction for new teachers, peer coaching, and leadership development for heads of institutions. TSC aims to build teacher competencies in areas such as curriculum delivery, learner engagement, and adherence to education policies. According to the rollout plan, 22,239 teachers are set to benefit from the program, including 19,585 newly employed secondary school teachers and 3,654 heads of institutions appointed between 2018 and 2021. These include principals from teacher training colleges, primary school headteachers, and secondary school principals.
Education stakeholders have praised the TIMEC initiative for addressing gaps in teacher preparedness and promoting a culture of continuous improvement. By fostering mentorship and collaboration, the program is expected to reduce indiscipline, improve retention, and enhance learning outcomes. Nairobi County officials have expressed support for scaling the program to junior secondary and ECDE levels, aligning with Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) reforms.
