Nairobi Teachers Attend Leadership Workshop to Strengthen School Governance

In April 2025, Nairobi hosted the Schools2030 Global Forum, organized by the Aga Khan Foundation, spotlighting teacher leadership as a catalyst for transforming education. The forum emphasized the role of educators in achieving SDG4—inclusive and equitable quality education—and featured sessions on school governance, community engagement, and policy influence. Teachers, policymakers, and education leaders from over 30 countries gathered to share strategies for empowering teachers as central voices in shaping learning environments. The event underscored the need for schools to adopt participatory governance models where teachers contribute to decision-making and curriculum design.
Later in the year, on November 8–9, 2025, the AFED Regional Education Forum was held in Nairobi, hosted by the Nairobi Jaffery Education Board. This two-day workshop brought together over 40 educators, school leaders, and education board representatives from Nairobi, Mombasa, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, and Antananarivo. The forum focused on strengthening inter-school collaboration, promoting holistic education, and improving mental wellbeing within school settings. Sessions included best practices in school governance, leadership for sustainability, and strategies for inclusive learning. Participants explored how governance structures can support teacher autonomy, learner voice, and community accountability.
In parallel, the LAIT Foundation Africa held its 2nd Annual International School Leadership Conference & Retreat in Nairobi, themed Building Schools of Impact: Leadership for Innovation, Growth, and Sustainability. This immersive six-day experience allowed educators to observe best practices at top international schools, engage in leadership coaching, and develop action plans for school improvement. The retreat emphasized transformational leadership, strategic planning, and ethical governance, equipping teachers with tools to lead change in their institutions.
These workshops reflect Nairobi’s growing commitment to professional development and school leadership. By investing in teacher-led governance, the city aims to foster resilient, inclusive, and high-performing schools. Educators who attended reported increased confidence in managing school operations, engaging stakeholders, and driving innovation. The initiatives are expected to influence policy and practice across Kenya, reinforcing the role of teachers as leaders in education reform.
