$40 Million pharmaceutical plant to boost Great Lakes Region’s drug supply (in Kisumu)

Kisumu County, in partnership with Med Aditus and Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK), is establishing a $40 million pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. The facility will produce high-quality, subsidized drugs for the Great Lakes Region and beyond.

Production & Capacity:

Location: Next to Great Lakes University of Kisumu.

Annual Production: 2 billion tablets/capsules.

Drugs to cover:

Non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, cancer)

Infectious diseases (HIV, malaria, tuberculosis)

Neglected tropical diseases

Key Stakeholders:

Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o – Oversaw construction progress.

Dr. Dhiren R. Thakker, Ph.D., CEO of Med Aditus

Kisumu County officials: Chief Officers for Health (Dr. Ojwang’ Lusi), Lands (Victor Kanyaura), and Director of Medical Services (Dr. Don Ogolla)

Funding & Impact:

Financed mainly through Afreximbank’s Africa Health Security Investment Plan.

Expected to create hundreds of jobs for the local community.

Strengthens health product manufacturing capacity in the region.

Significance:

The project positions Kisumu as a regional hub for affordable, high-quality medicines, addressing critical public health needs while supporting local economic growth and employment.
