3 Suspected Cases of Deadly Coronavirus in Kenya Admitted to Hospital in Mombasa
Health authorities in Mombasa have admitted three people to a local hospital after exhibiting symptoms consistent with the deadly coronavirus that has caused global concern.
According to officials from the Ministry of Health, the three individuals — who recently arrived from China — were taken to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for observation and testing. The ministry said the cases remain suspected and that samples have been sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratories in Nairobi for further analysis.
We have taken all precautionary measures to isolate the patients and protect both health workers and the public, said Dr. Daniel Simiyu, the County Director of Health. At this point, there is no confirmed case of coronavirus in Kenya.
The suspected patients reportedly presented with fever, persistent cough, and respiratory difficulties — symptoms similar to those seen in confirmed cases in China and other countries.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has heightened screening procedures for all passengers arriving at the Port of Mombasa and Moi International Airport, where thermal scanners have been installed. Travelers from affected regions are required to fill health declaration forms and undergo temperature checks.
Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho assured residents that the county government is working closely with national health agencies to ensure proper surveillance and emergency response.
We urge the public to remain calm and follow official health advisories, the governor said.
As of now, no case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Kenya, but the government maintains high alert following the outbreak’s spread to several countries outside China.
Public Health officials have advised residents to observe hygiene measures such as regular handwashing, wearing masks in crowded areas, and avoiding unnecessary travel to affected regions.
