Kenya’s golf calendar is set to receive a notable new event with the first Invest Kenya Golf Tournament (IKGT), scheduled to begin on March 27, 2026, at the renowned Muthaiga Golf Club.
The one-day event, utilizing a Stableford format, is anticipated to draw approximately 200 participants from Kenya and other countries.
Attendees will encompass senior corporate executives, amateur golf enthusiasts, and selected professional players from Kenya’s rapidly developing golf sector, establishing the tournament as both an athletic competition and a premier networking opportunity.
Taking place at Muthaiga Golf Clubrecognized as one of Africa’s leading championship venuesthe tournament introduces a major event to Kenya’s golf landscape while enhancing the country’s status as a premier golfing destination on the continent. Financial services provider Absa serves as the primary sponsor for the initial edition.
The Invest Kenya Golf Tournament has been established as an associated component of the Kenya International Investment Conference (KIICO 2026).
It is intended to function as the sporting centerpiece of the conference week, creating an environment where athletics, investment discourse, and international prominence intersect.
During the official announcement, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya, speaking through Director of Sports Jackson Indakwa, highlighted the importance of sporting events in promoting Kenya’s global image.
“Sport continues to present Kenya on the international stage. Initiatives such as the Invest Kenya Golf Tournament reinforce Kenya’s identity as a host for major sporting events while promoting golf development within the country,” stated the Cabinet Secretary, noting that global competitions like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games have historically been instrumental in marketing the country internationally.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the tournament is projected to advance golf development in Kenya by increasing participation, raising visibility for local players, and building connections among corporate, amateur, and professional golfers. Several distinguished individuals from Kenya’s business and athletic communities, including prominent professional golfers, are expected to participate.
Muthaiga Golf Club Chairman Dennis Mwirigi welcomed Invest Kenya and its collaborators, emphasizing the Club’s enduring contribution to Kenya’s international golfing reputation.
“Muthaiga Golf Club has hosted over 95 per cent of the Magical Kenya Open tournaments in the past. Welcoming investors to the Club represents a significant milestone in aligning sports with national investment goals,” he remarked, noting that the new tournament further solidifies Kenya’s position among Africa’s foremost golf destinations.
Registration for the tournament is currently available through the KIICO website, with organizers indicating that more than 150 players have already registered.
The registration deadline is expected in early March. Invest Kenya has confirmed that the tournament is planned to become a regular occurrence on Kenya’s golf schedule.
Invest Kenya Chief Executive Officer John Mwendwa stated that the event reflects the agency’s wider investment mission.
“Golf offers a setting for continuous engagement, strategic discussions, and trust-buildingprinciples that align with both athletic pursuits and long-term investment collaborations,” he explained.
The tournament will conclude with a closing awards ceremony signifying the official conclusion of KIICO week, bringing together participants, sponsors, and stakeholders in a final gathering. Additional information regarding player involvement and program highlights will be released prior to the event.
